A leaking tire valve is a very commonly overlooked area on a leaking tire. The Schrader tire valve can form a leak over time, either from dirt or a damaged seal. Sometimes the tire valve may even be defective because it is new. I have had this problem in the past and have successfully replaced my tire valve with a new one.
So if your tire is leaking air and you suspect it’s the tire valve, or you don’t know what’s causing your tire to leak air, keep reading. I’ll show you how to find and fix a leaking tire valve.
tire valve assembly
1. Valve housing
The Schrader valve housing can be rubber or solid, but the inside of the valve is the same. The only difference with a valve is the temperature rating that would be used in a commercial application, such as something with a heavy load and extensive driving.
Pictured above I have the most common shape found on vehicles. The casing is installed from the inside when the tire bead is broken or the tire has been removed and pulled out. The groove at the bottom is what clips into place on aluminum or steel wheels.
2. Tire valve
The red ring on the outside is the outer seal that goes against the casing. The threaded portion moves to the top. The central spring-loaded part is the valve. When the air chuck is set into place it will push the center part allowing air to enter.
At the bottom of the inward-facing center part of the tire, there is also another stamp on this surface. As for the outer casing, this is just a casing to hold the valve. It is hollow in the center and there is a threaded part on the inner-outer side of the valve.
